First association for transport accessibility in Europe

For a Europe where everyone can move freely

Accessible Mobility Europe is a citizen movement created to promote inclusive mobility across Europe. We believe getting around is a fundamental right, not a privilege.

Accessible Mobility Europe

Who are we? An activist, citizen association

Accessible Mobility Europe is a European activist and citizen association based in Lyon, with a mission that’s simple to say (a bit less simple to do):

Pool best practices and build a European network of stakeholders working for transport accessibility.

Our slogan sums up the mindset:

“We’re not going to reinvent the wheel!”Accessibility already exists! Let’s spread it across Europe.”

We want a Europe where people with reduced mobility are no longer stuck because of a broken elevator, an impassable sidewalk, or a metro without lifts.A Europe where the freedom to move is finally a tangible right, not just a nice paragraph in a treaty.

Association pour la mobilité réduite en Europe

Our story: From an observation in Lyon to European action

The turning point: Barcelona, a model of inclusive mobility

From the idea to creating the association

A year ago, in Lyon.Antoine Durand, a citizen of Lyon and wheelchair user, had had quite (really) enough:

  • broken elevators in the Lyon metro,

  • endless detours just to go a few stops,

  • repeated hassles in Lyon, in Paris… and elsewhere.

Antoine starts to speak out publicly to raise awareness of the problem and get things moving. Because yes—after a while, “enough is enough.”

At the same time, he often travels around Europe with his personal assistants. And then comes the shock of contrasts:from one country to another, from one city to another, accessibility can go from “commando mission” to “oh—so it is possible!”.

The turning point: Barcelona

In August, Antoine goes to Barcelona for a few days with Claya, one of his personal assistants. And then… revelation:

  • accessible metros,

  • buses designed for everyone,

  • a city where you can feel accessibility isn’t just a “nice-to-have.”

“In Barcelona, I discovered that accessibility in transport and the city… really exists.”

On the way back, on the train, the idea takes root:

  • What if we stopped suffering on our own, each in our corner?

  • What if we shared the good ideas between cities and countries?

  • What if we got accessibility moving as smoothly as trains are supposed to?

That’s where the idea of Accessible Mobility Europe.

From the idea to the association

Back in France, Antoine and Claya decide to create the association:

  • Antoine becomes president,

  • Claya agrees to take on the role of treasurer,

  • they suggest to Olwen, another personal assistant, to become secretary: she immediately says yes.

Since then, the small idea born in the (broken) Lyon metro and confirmed in the (accessible) Barcelona metro has become:

Our mission

Our association’s mission for reduced mobility

Accessible Mobility Europe is:

A European project

We work at the European level, because trains, planes, and coaches don’t stop at borders… and neither do the hassles.

An activist movement

We talk about accessibility, but also about rights, equality, dignity, and freedom of movement. We call out, we propose, we build.

A user-centered approach

Those most affected—people with reduced mobility, relatives, caregivers—are the ones who know what blocks and what works. We start from their experiences, not glossy brochures.

In practice, we want to:

Highlight accessibility best practices that already exist across Europe,

Create a European network of associations, collectives, experts, and institutions,

Bring a shared voice to decision-makers,

Make inclusive mobility a major political priority.
